SPEAKERS and Suggested Readings:
Richard J. Powell is the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History
at Duke, where he has taught since 1989. He teaches courses in the arts of the African
Diaspora, American art, and contemporary visual studies, and he has written on topics
ranging from primitivism to postmodernism. Exhibitions curated by Powell have appeared
in such institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art
Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Powell was recently named editor-in-chief of
The Art Bulletin, and he has received many honors, including two Ford Foundation
Fellowships and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.

Margaret Di Giulio T'06 graduated from Duke last year with an AB in art history
and visual art. A Durham native, Margaret now works in Duke's admissions office but will
soon begin a master's program at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. As a student,
Margaret studied abroad in Florence, Italy, and was one of four students to co-curate the
contemporary art exhibition "Conjuring Bearden" with Professor Powell at Duke's new
Nasher Museum of Art.

Jeff Stern T'07 is a Philadelphia native majoring in public policy and pursuing a
certificate in policy journalism and media studies. He won an undergraduate journalism
award for one of his feature stories for the Independent Weekly. He has also written for
Duke Magazine and the Buenos Aires Herald and interned at CNN. In addition, Jeff is cofounder
of Cultural Convergence International, a non-profit that establishes youth athletic
leagues in impoverished communities throughout the world.
