SPEAKERS and Suggested Readings:

Gary Gereffi is a professor of sociology and director of the Center on Globalization, Governance, and Competitiveness. He teaches courses in economic sociology, globalization and comparative development, and international competitiveness. Gereffi's research focuses on social and environmental certification in global industries, competitive strategies of global firms, and industrial upgrading in East Asia and Latin America. He has published several books and numerous articles on international business-government relations, including Latin America in the 21st Century: Toward a New Sociopolitical Matrix and Free Trade and Uneven Development: The North American Apparel Industry after NAFTA.

Seyward Darby T'07 of Greenville, N.C., is a Benjamin N. Duke Scholar majoring in English, minoring in political science, and pursuing a certificate in policy journalism and mass media studies. A former editor of The Chronicle, Seyward is currently editor of the editorial page and a senior writer for Towerview. Having spent part of 2006 teaching in a rural province of Thailand and backpacking across Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, she plans to join the Peace Corps or a similar international service program after graduation.

Chauncey Nartey T'07 is a political science and public policy double major pursuing a minor in economics. He was born in war-torn Liberia, but his mother fled, first to Ghana and then to the United States. Now a Reginaldo Howard Scholar, Chauncey has been active with Duke Student Government, the Africana Mentoring Program, and his fraternity. He also serves on the Campus Culture Initiative Committee, a task force charged with recommending improvements to student life and campus culture.
