SPEAKERS and Suggested Readings:

Sherryl Broverman is an associate professor of the practice in the Department of Biology. She has developed HIV/AIDS education programs with universities in Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa, and at Duke, she teaches courses for non-science majors and a course focusing on HIV/AIDS. Broverman's research focuses on how non-majors respond to science courses that address civic issues, international connections, and social engagement. She is also working to create linked, international curricula for non-science and pre-major students at Duke University and Egerton University in Kenya.

Sherryl Broverman was the 2005 winner of the David and Janet Vaughan Brooks Award, given for teachers excelling in the sciences and math. Here is a teaching statement she prepared:

Andrew Longenecker E'07 of Jupiter, Florida, is triple majoring in economics, mechanical engineering, and biomedical engineering. He is active in Duke's Greek community, both through the Interfraternity Council and his own fraternity, and is also involved in student government and community service. Andrew has helped launch several student businesses, and these experiences have resulted in a greater interest in engineering research and entrepreneurship.

Sarah Gordon T'08 of Iowa City, Iowa, is a public policy major and an Alice M. Baldwin Scholar. She currently serves as co-president of a student-run service-learning club, and she works as a volunteer at the Durham Crisis Response Center. Sarah is beginning to do research for her senior honors thesis, which will focus on the effects of federal housing policy.
