SPEAKERS and Suggested Readings:

Richard Lischer is the James T. and Alice Mead Cleland Professor of Preaching in the Divinity School. He joined the Duke faculty in 1979 after eight years of service as a Lutheran pastor. His intellectual interests include the varied practices of ministry and the interactions of theology with literature, politics, and culture. Lischer has worked at Duke and on many other campuses to promote the theological and professional integrity of the ministry. He is the author of numerous books, including Open Secrets, a memoir of his ministry in a small country church, and The Preacher King: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Word that Moved America.

Malik Burnett T'07 is originally from Montego Bay, Jamaica, but his family now lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He is majoring in psychology, with minors in philosophy and chemistry. Malik serves as president of both the Black Student Alliance and Black Male Outreach and Education. Through these organizations, he enjoys working with other students to help strengthen the Duke and Durham communities.

Elle Pishny T'07 of Stilwell, Kansas, is a public policy major, pursing a minor in economics and a markets and management certificate. She is on the varsity cross country and track teams and serves as the Duke Panhellenic Association's director of philanthropy and community service. Elle and two of her classmates created the Duke Summer of Service program. This program enables undergraduates to pursue meaningful service-based internships in cities across the country while living with alumni family hosts.
